DANGEROUS: Observations Regarding Saudi Penetration of Egyptian Islam

Harold's List
From a friend in Egypt

"There is a big difference between how the Koran is chanted in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Saudi style is almost a gutteral monotone, whereas the traditional Egyptian method is more melodic.

What's interesting is that the Saudi method of reading Koran is now broadcast on the state run Islam radio channel. This is important because it's evidence of the Saudi influence in Cairo.

One of the drivers of this influence is IQRA, a satellite channel that appears to be the fasting growing channel in the Arab world. Iqra is sophisticated. It has cartoon programs, self help hours, call in programs and of course lots of preaching. No women are shown on the channel, even in veils.

Iqra is one of the ten or fifteen stations that are included in bootleg satellite packages for most Egyptians. This is when a satellite subscription is purchased, but through tampering the box many households get the service."
