Ex-US diplomat pleads guilty in Taiwan spy case
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Tuesday, 13 December: 14.35 CET) - A former US State Department official pleaded guilty on Tuesday to removing top secret government documents while having a personal relationship with a female Taiwanese spy.
Keyser, a former second-ranking official in the State Department's East Asian affairs section, admitted to having a personal relationship with Taiwanese spy Isabelle Cheng.
US authorities said Keyser's relationship with Cheng - who was allegedly an employee with Taiwan's foreign intelligence agency - lasted from 2002 to September 2004.
Keyser had also served at US embassies in Beijing and Tokyo.
The former State Department official is expected to be sentenced in late February. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison.
