Freedom House: Syria Lags in Freedom the Rest of the World
Harold's List
Washington DC, December 19, 2005/RPS/ -- In a comprehensive global survey called "Freedom in the World" that was issued today by Freedom House, Syria was given the lowest marks when it comes to Political Rights (PR) or Civil Liberties (CL) scoring a 7 on both, the lowest mark assessed against a country. Syria shares this honor with seven other countries worldwide.
The survey also concluded that 2005 marks the year in which more countries became free and the people of the Arab Middle East experienced a modest but potentially significant increase in political rights and civil liberties.
The survey also shows that although the Middle East continues to lag behind other regions, a measurable improvement can be seen in freedom in several key Arab countries thanks to a consistent US policy of encouraging democratic reforms.
Country narratives will be released in book form in summer 2006.
