Peru declares regional state of emergency to fight rebels
Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo on Wednesday declared a 60-day state of emergency in three provinces of the country to crack down armed anti-government groups.
Toledo said the government declared the state of emergency in central provinces of Huanuco, San Martin and Ucayali to strengthen the fight against the rebellious Shining Path with combined forces of the national police and navy forces.
The government will also carry out a social development project to help local peasants to grow economic plants instead of those used to extract narcotics, he said.
Over the past 15 days, 13 police officers have been killed in central provinces where narcotics are widely produced. The government believes the Shining Path, the major armed rebel group in Peru, were behind those attacks.
The government blamed the Shining Path for 54 percent out of the total 60,000 people killed in domestic wars during the past two decades.
