Russia modernizes its missile forces
VLASIKHA (Moscow region), December 16 (RIA Novosti) - Several changes has been made in the composition of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Commander Nikolai Solovtsov said Friday.
"I am pleased to report that we put a fifth regiment armed with the silo-based Topol-M missile on combat duty in December," he said, adding that the addition had been made in accordance with the missile forces modernization plan.
He also said Russia would test launch from five to eight strategic missiles in 2006, but disband several units in the Urals and Siberia.
In 2005, Russia disbanded two missile divisions, but formed more than 20 new units.
In addition, the first mobile Topol-M missile complex will be put on combat duty in 2006, he said.
Overall, the Strategic Missile Forces accomplished all the goals set for 2005, Solovtsov said.
