Indian troops kill 6 Kashmir militants
JAMMU, India, Jan 28, (Reuters) - Indian soldiers gunned down six Islamist separatists trying to cross into Indian Kashmir on Saturday, a senior army officer said.
One soldier was injured in the clash 250 km (160 miles) north of Jammu, the winter capital of Indian Kashmir.
"The movement was detected by electronic sensors in the wee hours today when a group of infiltrators was attempting to scale the barbed wire fence near the LoC, Lieutenant-Colonel R. K. Chibber said, referring to the Line of Control dividing Indian and Pakistani Kshmir.
India accuses Pakistan of sending armed rebels into Indian Kashmir where a revolt against New Delhi's rule has killed tens of thousands of people since 1989. Pakistan denies the charge.
The nuclear rivals came close to a third war over Kashmir in 2002, but ties have improved through a long and slow peace process.
