Iran's Ahmadinejad to visit Syria
LONDON, January 16 (IranMania) - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will leave for Syria in the coming days for his first official visit to the Islamic republic's only regional ally, his office said, AFP reported.
A presidential aide said the two-day trip would take place before Friday, and follows a visit to Iran last year by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
It will be Ahmadinejad's third visit overseas since his shock election win in June 2005. Last September he visited the United Nations in New York, and in December he travelled to Saudi Arabia.
Both Iran and Syria have been accused by the United States of taking insufficient action to prevent armed opponents of the US-led coalition from slipping into Iraq.
Iran is also under mounting international pressure over its disputed nuclear programme, while Syria is engaged in a standoff with the West over a UN inquiry into the assassination of Lebanese former premier Rafiq Hariri.
