Dozens killed in clashes in Russia
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Friday, 10 February: 15.58 CET) - At least ten militants and four Russian policemen were killed on Friday in clashes in the southern Stavropol region, where police had surrounded armed insurgents seeking refuge in a small village, according to Russian media reports.
Around 300 police and special forces took part in the operation in the predominately Muslim region in Russia’s North Caucasus.
According to Russian media reports, militants had seized two houses late on Thursday in the village. The villagers were evacuated before the clashes began.
Russian media said the rebels belonged to the Shelkovskoy Jamaat militant group, which allegedly derives its name from an area in northern Chechnya.
Additional troops have been deployed to the area as reinforcements.
Russian media quoted officials as saying the militants had taken several civilians hostage, but no further details were available at the time of writing.
