PAKISTAN: RADIO TOWER IN TRIBAL AREA BLOWN UP

Islamabad, 20 March (AKI) - A radio tower in the tribal belt of Waziristan which lies on the Pakistan-Afghan border has been completely destroyed by suspected Islamic militants, according to a report on the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA. Radio transmissions were suspended when the tower in the town of Wana in South Waziristan was blown up late on Sunday night, security officials said.

This radio station was set up two years ago and broadcasts six hours of news music and religious programmes in the Pashtu language over a 20 kilometre radius.

It is the second such attack on the station which was first hit in 2004 soon after its inauguration. The station was formed as a way for the Pakistani government to explain its position on the ongoing military operation in the region.

The Pakistani security forces have launched operations against the pro-Taliban militants in the North Waziristan agency this month. More than 100 militants have been killed in the two-week long operations. Some 80,000 Pakistani troops are involved in hunting Taliban and al-Qaeda militants in the region.
