IRAN NUCLEAR: SUPREME LEADER THREATENS GLOBAL RETALIATION IF US ATTACKS

Tehran, 26 April (AKI) - Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the United States on Wednesday that it would be harmed across the world if it decided to attack Iran over its nuclear ambitions. "The Americans should know that if they launch an assault against Islamic Iran, their interests in every part of the world will be harmed," Khamenei was quoted as saying by state television. "The Iranian nation will respond to any blow with double the intensity," he also said.

The Ayatollah was speaking shortly after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed that Iran would resist UN demands that it halt its uranium enrichment programme, which Western powers fear is aimed at building nuclear weapons. Tehran claims its atomic programme is solely for civilian use.

The UN is seeking a diplomatic solution but the US has not ruled out military strikes against Iranian nuclear sites.

Addressing workers in Tehran on International Labourers' Day, Khamenei also said that "the Iranian nation and its officials are peace seekers and the Islamic Republic would not invade anybody."

In a non-binding statement issued on 29 March, the Security Council called on Iran to abide by demands of the UN atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to suspend uranium enrichment work by Friday, 28 April.

The head of the IAEA, Mohammed ElBaradei, is expected to report back to the Council on Iran's compliance on Friday.

The US is trying to win support from the Security Council for punitive action against Iran, including sanctions. However, two of the Council's five veto-holding members, Russia and China, oppose the move.
