Jordan Islamists back nuclear Iran
AMMAN, Jordan, April 20 (UPI) -- Jordan's Islamists believe that Iran's possession of nuclear technology does not pose a threat to Arab countries and their interests.
The Islamic Action Front, the political façade of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood Organization, said in a statement Thursday that "Iran has the right to seek nuclear technology for peaceful purposes just any other country."
Iran announced earlier this month that it enriched uranium successfully for energy purposes, stirring U.S. and European objections and threats to impose sanctions against Tehran.
The statement said the Islamic Action Front has repeatedly called for curbing nuclear arms proliferation and destroying nuclear weapons throughout the world and the Middle East region specifically.
"There is no moral justification or humanitarian interest in the production of these weapons," the statement said, stressing the dangers of Israel's nuclear program and the need to inspect it by the international community "because it poses a big threat to all countries of the region."
However, the Islamists underlined that "it is Iran's duty and the right of Arab countries, especially in the Gulf, to get clear and definite guarantees through treaties and other means that Iran will not develop weapons of mass destruction and its nuclear facilities should be monitored to protect humans inside and outside Iran."
In another development, the Brotherhood's spiritual guide Salem Fuleihat said the group will organize a fund raising campaign for the Palestinian people.
Fuleihat told United Press International the Islamic movement will discuss with the various Jordanian political forces means for raising the funds and channeling them to the Palestinian people who suffer from difficult economic conditions.
The U.S. and European Union suspended aid to the Palestinians since Hamas formed the government following its victory in general elections.
