Pakistani forces kill 'foreign' militants

ISN SECURITY WATCH (Thursday, 13 April 2006: 13.14 CET) – The Pakistani army on Thursday claimed it had killed at least seven insurgents in helicopter gunship attacks on foreign militants near the border with Afghanistan.

Military officials told reporters the army had attacked a compound near Miran Shah in the country's North Waziristan province.

Military spokesman Major-General Shaukat Sultan told reporters that at least four of killed militants were foreigners.

The army attacked the compound after receiving information from militants captured last month, reports said.

The military has conducted as series of raids in the province over the past month and a half.

Nearly 200 people have been killed in clashes or armed attacks in the region since last month.

Pakistan has deployed 80,000 troops in the region to hunt militants who are believed to have taken refuge there after US-led forces overthrew the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2001.
