Russia withdrawing from Georgia
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Thursday, 4 May 2006: 10.24 CET) - Russia has begun withdrawing heavy military hardware from its Akhalkalaki base in Georgia, RFE/RL reported.
Under an agreement signed on 31 March, Russia is to withdraw from two bases in Georgia - Akhalkalaki and Batumi - by 2008.
The pullout from Akhalkalaki, in the south of the country, is to be completed by December this year.
The equipment is being withdrawn to Tsalka in eastern Georgia, and some of it will be redeployed to a Russian base in neighboring Armenia later, RFE/RL reported.
The presence of Russian troops on the Soviet-era bases in Georgia have long been the key factor in the two countries' continually souring relations.
