Beijing to strengthen energy ties with Tehran

UPI Energy Watch: Iran and China secured energy contracts and are holding talks to increase political and economic cooperation.

Gholam-Hossein Nozari, managing director of the National Iranian Oil Co., or NIOC, said the two sides are moving forward on talks.

Officials from China's state-owned oil giant Sinopec finalized an agreement to explore and develop the Garmsar oil and gas field. The amount of the deal was not revealed.

Nozari said the two sides are considering signing other agreements as well.

"We have begun bigger operations in our oil sector. Our oil production in the last three months has increased by up to 150,000 barrels," he said.

Nozari said NIOC is in the midst of negotiating three liquefied natural gas exploration projects with Chinese officials, in addition to the four agreements for the South Pars oil field's Phases 19, 20, 21 and 22.

He said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's three-day visit to China was a "turning point" in the expansion of Iran's relations with China in the energy sector.
