MOROCCO: 13 MEMBERS OF LITTLE KNOWN ISLAMIC PARTY ARRESTED
Rabat, 27 Sept. (AKI) - Moroccan security forces have arrested thirteen people, accused of being members of the Islamic Liberation Party, Al-Jazeera Arab news website reported Wednesday. The network's correspondent in Rabat, quoted an official source saying that these arrests took place in three cities, Casablanca, Tetuan, and Meknes. This is the first official recognition of the existence of an organisation called the Islamic Liberation Party in Morocco.
The political formation is unauthorised in Morocco and believed to be linked to a party of the same name founded in the Middle East in the 1950's and gaining popularity in Central Asia during the last decade. It defines itself as a political party, seeks to restore the Islamic caliphate by removing the current Arab regimes and introducing sharia law.
