Security developments in Iraq, Sept 17

Sept 17 (Reuters) - Following are security and other developments in Iraq reported on Sunday, as of 1830 GMT:

KIRKUK - Five blasts caused by one suicide truck bomb and four car bombs killed 23 people and wounded 73 in the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk on Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

BAGHDAD - A total of 24 bodies, tortured and with a single shot to the head, were found in different areas of Baghdad during the last 24 hours, a Ministry of Interior source said.

*FALLUJA - Car bombs and mortar fire killed five in the western city of Falluja on Sunday, including two Iraqi police and one Iraqi soldier in coordinated attacks against a U.S. military centre in charge of reconstruction and a bridge. No U.S. casualties were reported in the attack, which wounded 23.

BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb in a popular bird and animal market in central Baghdad killed two people and wounded eight, police said.

BAQUBA - Two policemen guarding electrical infrastructure were killed and three wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their patrol in the religiously mixed city of Baquba, police said.

TAJI - Gunmen killed two policemen in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, a source in the Ministry of Interior said.

ANBAR PROVINCE - A U.S. sailor was killed in combat on Saturday in western Anbar province, the U.S. military said. U.S. Navy medics serve with the Marines in the desert province, where Sunni Arab insurgents are active.

MOSUL - Gunmen killed a man who was in charge of pilgrims' affairs in the city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

MOSUL - Gunmen shot dead the body guard of Osama al-Najafi, a former minister of industry and minerals, in Mosul, police said.

BAGHDAD - Two Iraqi soldiers and a civilian were wounded when a roadside bomb went off near an army patrol near al-Shaab national football stadium in central Baghdad, a source in the Ministry of Interior said.

BAGHDAD - Two policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their patrol in the northern Adhamiya district of Baghdad, police said.

MOSUL - A policeman was wounded when a roadside bomb went off near his patrol in Mosul, police said.

DIWANIYA - U.S. and Iraqi forces detained 32 insurgent suspects and seized 11 AK-47 assault rifles and various small-arms weapons during an operation on Saturday in Diwaniya, south of Baghdad, and surrounding areas, the U.S. military said on Sunday.

BASRA - Iraqi police confiscated a large amount of ammunition, including artillery shells and anti-tank rounds, during a raid near Basra on Saturday following a tip-off, a British military spokesman said.

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi army arrested a "terrorist" and 56 suspected insurgents during the last 24 hours in different cities of Iraq, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

BALAD - A local oil pipeline was sabotaged by a bomb in the town of Balad, 80 km (55 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

BAGHDAD - A brother of one of Saddam's co-accused in the trial for genocide against Kurds in the 1980s was kidnapped by gunmen in his Baghdad home on Friday, relatives and a defence lawyer said. Amid al-Douri, brother of Sabir al-Douri, ex director of military intelligence, was taken in the Shi'ite district of Kadhimiya.
