Swedish Iranians show support for Israel

The Swedish branch of the National Union for Democracy in Iran Saturday held a demonstration in central Stockholm to show their opposition to the Iranian president’s comments that Israel should be “wiped off the map”.

Protesters carried a dozen Iranian flags and two Israeli flags.

The speaker of the group Ali Etemadi explained that the demonstration was “a popular protest in defense of the existence of the Israeli population”.

“President Ahmadinejad organises terror acts in Europe and the Middle East. His goal to manufacture nuclear weapons is a global threat, not just a threat to the Middle East,” he told the crowds.

Guest speaker Fredrik Malm, the chairman for the Youth Section of the Swedish Liberal Party, said: “Iran espouses an extremist ideology, gives fanatical support to terrorism, and deprives its own population of their human rights.”

Malm last year received a prize from the Swedish branch of Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, for his “efforts for democracy and his opposition to racism, Antisemitism and hatred”.
Violation of human rights

National Union banners at the demonstration read: “Down with Iran’s Islamic regime!” and “Stop the terrorists!”.

Another poster said: “President Ahmadinejad’s goal is to disrupt the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians and to contribute to Islamic terror groups in the area. Ahmadinejad’s main goal is to produce nuclear weapons in order to one day ‘wipe Israel off the map’.”

In an open letter to UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, “on the Islamic Regime’s contravention of the UN Charter” from 14 November, the National Union wrote:

“This regime violates the human rights of the Iranian people while it supports terrorist groups internationally. Its nuclear intentions remain a mystery to the people of Iran and the world, and its continuous intervention in Middle Eastern affairs destroys any hope of peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.”

It concludes that “there is no other solution but to expel the Islamic regime and return Iran’s seat at the United Nations to its legitimate sovereigns, the people of Iran.”
