Militant base in Chechnya discovered, Attack on police prevented in Daghestan

ROSTOV-ON-DON, December 21 (Itar-Tass) - A militants' base has been spotted it the Shelkovskoi district of Chechnya in a forest near the Paraboch settlement, a source in the Russian main police department for the Southern federal district told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

According to the official, “The base found the previous day was made for 30 people, equipped with dugouts a well with drinking water, however, to all appearances, has not been in use for a long time.” A total of 2.5 kilogrammes of TNT, 10 rounds to an underbarrel grenade launcher, five electric fuses, a hand grenade and 450 cartridges have been found there.

Police also have uncovered a cache with weapons and ammunition near the Zandak settlement in the border with Dagestan. According to police, the cache contained a Shmel flamethrower, 15 hand grenades, 25 rounds to an underbarrel grenade launcher, two self-made grenade launchers and several hundred cartridges to submachine guns.

The united press centre of the regional control headquarters said for its part that two militants have been detained in Chechnya on Tuesday. One of them was on the federal wanted list for attacks on police officers.

Attack on police prevented in Daghestan

MAKHACHKALA, December 21 (Itar-Tass) -- The police have prevented an attack of militants on the staff of the law enforcement agencies in the city of Khasavyurt, Daghestan. “A large arms cache was found at a construction site in the village of Aerodrom on Tuesday. “The weapons and ammunition, found in the arms cache, were prepared by the militants for an attack on one of the police facilities,” a representative of the Daghestan Interior Ministry told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

According to his information, a Mukha grenade launcher, six projectiles for a grenade launcher, 12 projectiles for an under-barrel grenade launcher, six grenades with fuses, eight 200-gram TNT blasting cartridges, six electric detonators, seven kilograms of aluminium powder, 350 cartridges and drawings of explosive devices were found in the arms cache. Aside from it, the police found in it leaflets, books and compact discs with religious propaganda materials.

“According to the current information, the arms cache belonged to Samir Pashayev, 22, from the Khasavyurt District, who is the leader of the gang,” the Interior Ministry official said.

Measures are being taken for establishing the names of members of the gang and for arresting them.
