Abbas vows not to run again
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Monday, 16 January: 11.45 CET) - Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmood Abbas has confirmed that he will not stand for reelection when his current term ends in three years.
In comments carried by Palestinian newspapers, Abbas said: "I will just complete my remaining three years in office […] "I will not run again. That is absolute."
The 70-year old PA chairman also pledged to work with interim Israeli leader Ehud Olmert to further the peace process. "I have dealt with him [Olmert] and I know him well," Abbas said, adding, "He has his positions and his views but we will deal with him without any preconceptions."
Abbas took over the leadership of the Fatah party after the death of Yasser Arafat and won a resounding election victory in a presidential poll last year in which Hamas did not stand a candidate.
