Israeli arrested on suspicion of spying for Iran
LONDON, January 7 (IranMania) - Security officers have arrested an Arab Israeli on suspicion that he was recruited by Iranian intelligence agents during a stay in Cyprus years ago, Israeli media reported.
Security officials believe Iranian agents planned to use Garais Garais, 57, to infiltrate Israel's political establishment through his membership of the left-wing Meretz-Yahad party, the Haaretz newspaper reported on its website, according to AFP.
Arrested last month but with the military censorship on his detention only just lifted, Garais served in the past as an operative for the Palestine Liberation Organisation and as head of the municipal council in Fasuta in the northern Galilee.
Living in Lebanon in the 1970s, he joined the PLO and took part in "terrorist" activities, public television reported.
He later returned to Israel, but during a stay on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus in the late 1990s, he made contact with Iranian intelligence, the television added.
Israeli politicians and military commanders have recently stepped up warnings about Iran, which the Jewish state and the United States accuse of trying to develop a nuclear arsenal.
Israeli fears were heightened when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in October called for the Jewish state to be "wiped off the map."
