Saudis recall ambassador in Denmark
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Friday, 27 January: 11.14 CET) - Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Denmark, saying the government had not taken enough action over newspaper cartoons seen as mocking Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.
“The ambassador’s withdrawal comes as a strong Saudi renouncement of those horrible cartoons that are rejected by Islam and Saudi Arabia,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a Thursday statement.
Ambassador Mohammad Ibrahim al-Hejailan had been posted in Denmark since March 2003.
Dozen of drawings published in September last year by the Danish daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten included one portraying the Prophet Muhammad wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb.
