Who are the Arab separatists in Iran?
Brief description of the Arab separatists conducting operations in the oil wealthy south-west Khuzistan province of Iran. (reference to recent bombings inside Iran)
Ahwaz Liberation Organisation
Ahwaz Liberation Organisation, was created in 1990 to establish an Arab state in the southern province of Khuzistan. The United Ahwazian Students in Europe is a student movement associated with the ALO while the Al-Ahwaz Popular Army and the Al-Ahwaz Free Officers Movement are the group's military wings. The ALO conducts alliance buidling and self-promotion activities outside of Iran while preparing to achieve readiness for the overthrow of the Iranian regime in hopes of establishing an autonomous state thereafter. Doubts arise however of it's effective pro-arab political activity within Iran itself.
The ALO have concentrated its military operations against Iran's energy sector(oil/power stations) as well as the assassination of local Iranian official's within its province. Tensions heated up when a letter allegedely from the Iranian government indicated a plan to push out the Arab's within the Khuzistan province to secure Iran's richest oil fields for the regime. Attacks by the ALO against Iran's oil infrastructure in 2004 and 2005 seems to disspell the myth that the ALO was heavily dependent on Saddam's finanacing and arms in the past. While foriegn support of the ALO is not new, allegations that the US and UK have begun to support the group along with the MEK are starting to appear. Both groups have been underestimated by the Iranian government and appear to be instrumental in the future of any attempted overthrow of the Islamic Regime in Iran.
