Wahhabi insurgent killed in Chechnya operation
MOSCOW - One of the main ideologists of radical Islam has been killed in a special operation in Chechnya, the Russian Interior Ministry said Thursday.
A ministry representative said wahhabite Supyan Abdulayev and two associates had been killed in central Chechnya.
According to the authorities, Abdulayev had been a close aide to the so-called minister of Shariat state security Islam Khalimov in Ichkeria, which is what Chechen separatists call Chechnya, and an accomplice in a number of serious crimes committed in the North Caucasus.
The ministry representative said the militants had been hiding in a village for several days. “They put up stiff resistance and were killed in a heavy firefight,” he said.
The official added that one ministry officer had been killed and another wounded in the skirmish.
Operatives seized three Kalashnikov assault rifles, three Makarov handguns, a Shmel grenade launcher, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and three radios during the operation.
