Bangladesh opposition leader in critical condition
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Tuesday, 21 February: 10.47 CET) – Unidentified assailants threw two bombs at Bangladeshi opposition leader Shaikh Yunus Ali in the country’s southwest, leaving him injured and in critical condition, news agencies reported.
Yunus Ali, the leader of the opposition Awami League, had his hand blown off in the attack, according to a police report cited by local media. The opposition leader was leaving a crowded marketplace when he was attacked.
No one else was injured, and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Party activists and sympathizers blocked a local highway city of Khulna in protest against the attack. Shaikh Yunus was already targeted last month but escaped unhurt.
In recent months, Bangladesh has been the scene of a spate of bomb attacks that have killed at least 30 people.
Government officials have blamed the attacks on the banned Jumatul Mujahideen Bangladesh militant group, which is seeking to establish strict Islamic rule in the secular Muslim-majority country.
