Palestinian militants claim ship attack

ISN SECURITY WATCH (Wednesday, 1 February: 14.37 CET) – Palestinian militants claimed to have launched an attack on an Israeli navy vessel on Wednesday.

Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades issued a joint statement in which they claimed to have fired two missiles at an Israeli ship near southern Gaza's sea border with Egypt, according to a Reuters report.

Israeli military spokespeople said that they were unaware of any such attack. Israeli naval vessels maintain a constant watch on the Gaza-Egypt sea border to prevent arms smuggling into the Gaza Strip

In other news, two Palestinians have been killed in a shootout with Israeli troops in the northern West Bank.

Pan-Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera quoted Islamic Jihad as saying that two members of the militant organization died in a shootout with Israeli troops on Tuesday in the village of Araba, near Jenin.

Four Palestinians were wounded in the Israeli raid with eyewitnesses reporting the storming of the village by 20 Israeli military vehicles.

An Israeli army spokesperson said that the incident also resulted in an unknown number of Israeli casualties.

The Israeli force was engaged in an arrest raid targeting militants from the Islamic Jihad movement, which has claimed responsibility for all six of the bombing attacks on Israeli civilians since a truce was signed between Palestinian factions in February 2005.
