US firm discovers gas in Syria
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- A U.S. contractor has reported the likelihood of a natural gas reserve in Syria.
Gulfsands Petroleum said an independent study assessed that a natural gas accumulation was located along the Tigris River in Syria. The study on Block 26 by Ryder Scott reported gas reserves equivalent of up to 722 million barrels of oil.
Executives said Gulfsands Petroleum plans to begin drilling four wells on Block 26 in August 2006. Gulfsands has already drilled six wells on the block, with three of them believed to contain commercial hydrocarbon accumulations.
The Tigris structure is the largest within Block 26 and beneath the Souedieh Field. Souedieh has estimated reserves of two billion barrels of oil and gas.
