Pipeline attacked in Balochistan
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Tuesday, 21 March: 13.49 CET) – Suspected militants on Tuesday reportedly blew up another gas pipeline in Pakistan's troubled Balochistan province.
The gas pipeline that was attacked is owned by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd., and company officials told reporters that the explosion would not affect output or distribution to consumers, according to al-Jazeera.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Monday, a smaller pipeline was blown up at the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Balochstan, disrupting gas supplies to some areas.
Since the beginning of this year, tribal militants have launched at least a dozen attacks on oil pipelines in the region, and more than 100 people reportedly have been killed in the past two months. Attacks increased following the government’s decision in December to hand out lucrative contracts for the exploration of oil and gas reserves.
The Balochistan Liberation Army, a tribal militant group, has claimed responsibility for the most of the attacks. Baloch tribesmen are fighting for greater autonomy and control over the gas-rich region’s resources and wealth.
