Developments in Iraq on May 4

May 4 (Reuters) - Following are security and political developments in Iraq on Thursday as of 1000 GMT.

Iraq is forming a new government of national unity to combat a mostly Sunni Arab insurgency. Sectarian tensions are running high after the bombing of a Shi'ite shrine in Samarra in February, which unleashed a wave of reprisal attacks.

*RAMADI - At least five people were killed in Ramadi in what witnesses and police said was a U.S. airstrike on a house.

One police official said up to 13 people may have been killed. Hospital officials said five people were killed and 15 wounded. The U.S. military said it was not aware of any airstrike on a house in Ramadi but was checking reports.

*TIKRIT - Gunmen kidnapped a leading businessman in the city of Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. A policeman and a civilian were killed when they tried to rescue him.

*NEAR FALLUJA - Iraqi police found the bodies of three people bearing signs of torture with bullet wounds in their bodies near Falluja, 50 km (35 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.

*HILLA - Iraqi police found the bodies of two strangled people on Wednesday inside a sack in the main road between Baghdad and Hilla, 100 km (62 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

*MUSAYIB - Five people were killed and three wounded on Wednesday due to a tribal quarrel between two tribes near Musayib, 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb exploded near a courthouse in Baghdad, killing at least nine people and wounding 46.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed Muhammed Ridha, a brigadier in the Defense Ministry, in the capital's Yarmouk district, police said.

NEAR TIKRIT - Gunmen killed an Iraqi soldier on Wednesday near Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, said the Joint Coordination Centre run by the U.S. and Iraqi militaries.

TIKRIT - Gunmen gunned down a tailor on Wednesday in Tikrit, the Joint Coordination Centre said.

BALAD - Gunmen killed a civilian on Wednesday in Balad, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, the Joint Coordination Centre said.
