Jordan Arrests Suspected Al-Qaeda Leader Operating in Iraq

May 23 (Bloomberg) -- Jordan's security forces arrested a suspected al-Qaeda leader involved in attacks in Iraq, the official Petra news agency reported.

The man, who wasn't identified, is suspected of involvement in abductions, killings, looting and theft, Petra reported, citing an announcement late yesterday by Jordan's General Intelligence Department.

Jordanian television will provide a special report today about the intelligence operation leading to the man's arrest, Petra said. It didn't give any other details.

Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi leads the al-Qaeda terrorist network in Iraq. His group said it carried out suicide bombings last November at three hotels in Jordan's capital, Amman, that killed at least 57 people.

Zarqawi's group has taken responsibility for some of the bloodiest attacks in Iraq, including beheadings of non-Iraqi hostages, since the ousting of Saddam Hussein in 2003. The U.S. has a $25 million bounty on Zarqawi.

Jordanian security forces in March foiled a suicide bomb attack on a civilian target in the country and arrested three suspected al-Qaeda terrorists, two of them Iraqi nationals and the third a Libyan citizen.

Jordan's King Abdullah II ordered security forces to undertake a war on terrorism in the aftermath of the Amman hotel bombings. Jordanian courts have sentenced Zarqawi to death in his absence for an attempted bomb attack on the border with Iraq and for the murder of U.S. diplomat Lawrence Foley in Amman in 2002.
