housands rally against the Kremlin in Moscow

About 2,000 people gathered in Moscow for a rally organised by several anti-Kremlin groups. Former chess champion Garry Kasparov was one of the leaders of the demonstration. United under the banner of the "Other Russia" movement were nationalists, radical youth activists and supporters of a free market, protesting against what they denounced as president Putin's growing authoritarianism and recent changes in electoral legislation.

Hundreds of police were deployed to stop the gathering turning violent. The demonstrators had originally planned a rally dubbed the "March of Those Who Disagree", but it was banned by the authorities. In the end, organizers said police detained several dozen activists at the rally and stopped others on their way there.
