Another time bomb explodes in Athens

Athens, Greece (dpa) - A bomb rocked the Ministry of Development and Commerce just as parliament held a debate on the budget, news reports said.

The bomb, which reports said was triggered by an alarm clock, was set off along a busy Athens street where the ministry is located. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

An unknown caller made a call to Greek daily newspaper Eleftherotypia, warning of the explosion.

In another part of central Athens, police closed off part of popular Syntagma Square after receiving another bomb threat, this one at the Finance Ministry. The city?s main Christmas tree is on the square, attracting thousands of shoppers two days before Christmas.

A group calling itself "Revolutionary Struggle" claimed responsibility Thursday for a bomb explosion at the National Economy Ministry last week in central Athens, claiming "economic terrorism."

In an eight-page statement published in the satirical newspaper "Pontiki", the group said the ministry was responsible for the "growing wretchedness of thousands of workers who lose their jobs every year and for all those who live in misery, trapped by poverty.

"The ministry is the home of some of the worst criminals of Greece's of Greece's political elite who engage in modern economic terrorism," the proclamation said.

The group claimed responsibility for the explosion that rocked a post office near the Economy Ministry in central Athens December 9, wounding three people and causing extensive damage.

Both the post office and Economy Ministry located in the city's main Syntagma Square, approximately 100 metres from the parliament building, were closed when the bomb exploded before dawn.

Officials initially said the explosive device was made up of 10 medium-sized gas canisters but later confirmed that it was a bomb triggered by an alarm clock likely left on a motorcycle parked close to the building.

It was the second bomb attack on a government building in six months. In June a terrorist group calling itself "Revolutionary Struggle" bombed the Labour Ministry in the heart of the city.
