Pakistan tests cruise missile
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Tuesday, 21 March: 11.06 CET) – The Pakistani military on Tuesday said it had successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable cruise missile that has the ability to carry a nuclear warhead and hit targets from 500 kilometers away.
Pakistan first tested the Babur, or Hatf VII, cruise missile in August last year. The second version of the missile is also capable of hitting a target from submarines and surface ships.
News agencies cited Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry as saying that it had not informed nuclear rival India about the launch as it does not fall under an accord requiring mutual notification of ballistic missile tests.
Last year, Pakistan and India agreed to give each other advance notice of future nuclear ballistic missile tests. The agreement, however, does not cover guided missiles.
India and Pakistan, which conducted tit-for-tat test nuclear detonations in 1998, routinely carry out tests of nuclear-capable missiles.
