Hamas militant killed by Fatah kidnappers

ISN SECURITY WATCH (Wednesday, 24 May 2006: 12.49 CET) – Masked Fatah gunmen kidnapped and shot three Hamas militants, killing one, on Wednesday morning, the Associated Press reports.

The Fatah gunmen, members of the Palestinian Preventative Security forces which fought Hamas militants in central Gaza City earlier this week, abducted the Hamas trio as they were leaving a Gaza mosque after morning prayers

The Hamas militants were thrown into a car where they were beaten and shot, Hamas officials told the AP, on condition of anonymity.

The three wounded men were then dumped at a gas station in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis.

The kidnapping was the latest in a series of violent incidents between the rival organizations in recent weeks.

The struggle between Fatah and Hamas has focused on whether the presidency or parliament exercise effective authority over Palestinian Authority (PA) security services.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas recently sought to block the creation of a 3,000-strong Hamas-controlled militia dubbed the Police Support Unit (PSU), but his protests were ignored by the Hamas-led government.

The PSU was deployed in the Gaza Strip a week ago, with thousands of Fatah-loyalists from competing PA security forces and the police taking to the streets of Gaza City in response.
