Bus Explosion in China Kills 8, Injures 19

Sunday, August 06, 2006

BEIJING (AP)— An explosion aboard a bus in southern China killed eight people on Sunday, a government news agency reported, just days after a similar explosion killed 11.

The explosion occurred at about 6:00 p.m. in Hunan province's Guiyang county, the Xinhua News Agency said.

Eight people died on the spot and 19 more were taken to hospital with injuries, Xinhua said. Seven of the injured were in a critical condition, Xinhua said.

Some 200 police were at the scene to help the injured and to direct traffic away from the blast site, it said. The cause of the blast was under investigation.

Last Thursday, 11 people were killed when a blast rocked a bus in southern China's Guizhou province just as it was leaving the terminal. That explosion, which injured 15, was also under investigation.

China has suffered a string of fatal explosions aboard public buses in recent years, blamed on both bomb attacks and accidents with gas canisters and other dangerous cargo.
