Uganda Military Claims to Have Killed Senior LRA Rebel

Uganda's military says it has killed a senior rebel wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

A Ugandan army spokesman Chris Magezi announced Sunday that Raska Lukwiya of the Lord's Resistance Army was killed Friday in Kitgum district after he ambushed government soldiers. The spokesman said former rebels identified Lukwiya's body.

The LRA has not confirmed the death.

The rebel group is accused of kidnapping, mutilating, and killing thousands of civilians during its 20-year war against the Ugandan government.

Southern Sudan's regional government is mediating peace talks between the two sides to end the violence.

Rebel leader Joseph Kony and four of his top commanders, including Lukwiya, face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court.
