'Kidnappers of Iranian border guards identified'
LONDON, January 8 (IranMania) - “The US intends to smite Iran through such actions,” Interior Minister Mostafa Purmohammadi said, emphasizing the fact that the agents behind the recent kidnapping of nine Iranian border guards are pursuing political objectives.
Purmohammadi told the Mehr News Agency that the Iranian government is seriously investigating the kidnapping, adding, “The United States can not directly confront Iran, so it tries to indirectly smite Iran through such actions.”
The interior minister stated that the kidnappers have been identified, and that they have asked for a ransom and have made other demands.
However, it is hoped that through the serious measures taken by the Iranian government, the nine Iranian hostages will be safely returned home, he added.
He also commented on the plan to establish regional security councils, saying, “It is an experiment. We should wait and see whether it will be successful in the western parts of the country or not. Then we can implement it in other regions as well.”
Purmohammadi explained that the plan would eventually be implemented in eastern Iran.
The western border areas consist of four provinces, but since the eastern border areas of the country are more centralized, the project can also be implemented in that region, and particularly in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, he pointed out.
Due to the insecurity in the region in the period after the revolution and during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, not much attention has been paid to western Iran and so, despite all the progress in other parts of the country, little progress has been made in the western border regions, he noted.
