Spanish general under house arrest after remarks on Catalonia
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Sunday, 8 January: 12.20 CET) - Spanish army chief General Jose Mena Aguado has been placed under house arrest after publicly saying that the military may need to intervene in Catalonia in their efforts to achieve autonomy, news agencies reported.
Aguado reported said the army would have to defend Spanish unity if Catalonia won autonomy.
In September, the Catalan regional parliament approved a controversial plan to increase the autonomy of the country’s wealthy northeastern region.
News reports said Aguado, who was placed under house arrest on Saturday, would so for eight days while the next step is decided.
